10 March 2022 - Todays Thursday Open Match results from the big lake at Chaley Park on a bright sunny day when catches were better than they’ve been since last Sunday, are
1st. Will Marchant on Peg 5 with a lovely 55lb.
2nd. Alec Barter on Peg 9 netting 47lb.12oz.
3rd. Trevor Willoughby on Peg 7 catching 46lb.
4th. James Turner, a bit further round on the road side on Peg 17, with 41lb.12oz.
5th. Paul Davis, next door but one on Peg 19 netted 37lb.4oz.
7 March 2022 - The beginning of March brings us the start of Meteorological Spring, although you would hardly believe it given the grey, wet weather we have been experiencing. Not to be outdone, the Thursday Open Matches re-started on Chaley Park big lake this week. They will continue on the big lake for the time being, and this week’s results are:
First out of the trap, and no surprise, Simon Hunter who managed 48lb., from Peg 33.
Second, and only a few ounces behind, was Roy Fiander with 46lb.8oz., taken from Peg 19.
Just to mess up the easy scoring, third place was shared at 43lb.8oz., each by Steve Lucie on Peg 3 and Roger Howe on Peg 17.
So, this leaves Roger Thorpe in fifth place on Peg 11 with 36lb.8oz.,
There was a sharp frost on Wednesday morning but Thursday 23 December dawned a little milder and the last open match of the year and of this season was held on Chaley Park’s big lake where all but one of the fish caught today were new stock.
The top five were:
First, Club Chairman and match organiser Rod Carroll on Peg 7 netted 15lb.6oz. A fitting end to his season and many thanks for putting on these matches.
Second place went to Roger Thorpe on Peg 31 with 13lb.
Third was Alec Barter on Peg 5 with 9lb.3oz.
Pete Hoare took fourth place with just one fish off Peg 21 weighing 7lb.10oz.
Fifth today was Chaley Water Manager Dave Wilkins on Peg 17 with 6lb.6oz.
Many thanks also go to Club Treasurer Paul White whom, I know, has assisted Rod Carroll on Scales and to the small team of committee members who have worked throughout this year to present Chaley in good condition. Thanks to the regular match anglers for your support of these matches.
The top anglers this year and their total points are:
Simon Hunter 65 Alec Barter 64 Mark Gilliam 46 Paul Davies 45
Tim Meekins 44
Roy Fiander 35
Dave Wilkins 32
Paul White 30
Roger Thorpe 29
Steve Lucie 28
Brian Stevens 28
Tony Conway 21
Rod Carroll 21
As I’ve said, this was the last match this year. We expect to run these again in the early spring of 2022 and club members will be told when these are to start in their regular newsletters. Non-members will need to watch this Facebook page.
Your intrepid open match reporter didn’t receive this week’s match names and weights until Friday. Normal service will be resumed soon but here are the weights for Thursday 2 December
First, on Peg 19, Ian Turner weighed in a respectable 33lb.
Second was Jim Findlay on Peg 21 with 27lb.8oz.
Chaley Park Water Manager David Wilkins was third with 15lb., off Peg 15.
Fourth, on Peg 9 weighing in 13lb.12oz., was Roy Fiander and
Fifth, Club Treasurer Paul White netted 12lb.4oz., from Peg 31.
On a cold Tuesday this week, only two pleasure anglers fished the big lake at Chaley Park. Neither of them caught and so it was for seven of the thirteen stalwarts who fished this week’s, 25 Nov 2021, Thursday Open. On a bitter day, only six weighed in and could only get a total weight of 60lb. So in a break with tradition we are going to record the six top weights. A lot of these fish were caught very early in the match so many hours were spent waiting for the next bite.
On Peg 5, Roy Fiander took top spot with two fish for a weight of 15lb.
Tony Chapman, on Peg 21 came second with 13lb.
Third was Alec Barter on Peg 31 with just one fish at 8lb.12oz.
Joint fourth with 8lb.8oz each were Ged Cooper (Peg19) and Paul Davies (Peg 17).
And sixth (sadly no points and no cigar), Rod Carroll on Peg 7 with one fish weighing 6lb.4oz.
Today, 18 Nov 2021, very much the same can be said for the match men on the weekly Open. Here are this week’s top five weights. Compare them to last week’s and see how frustrating fishing can be.
First on Peg 9 with 32lb.12oz., was Ged Cooper.
Second came Mark Gilliam with 19lb., from Peg 27.
Dave Wilkins showed again on Peg 17 coming Third with 18lb.12oz.
Fourth was Paul Davies on Peg 15 netting 15lb.8oz., and
Fifth Simon Hunter with 13lb.8oz., from Peg 23.
Here we are again then, 11 Nov 2021, Thursday evening and the results of this week’s Open Match on the big lake at Chaley Park. Yes, as suggested last week, same place same time but a small change this week. Two days before the match, more than two hundred new fish were stocked in the big lake, all young healthy mirrors going about 3-4lb., each and who was the lucky man who benefited most?
In first place, on Peg 31, Steve Lucie netted an astounding 119lb.8oz. Remember we are nearly halfway through November. Steve managed more than twice the weight of his two nearest rivals, put together, Jim Findlay on Peg 29 for second place with 52lb., and Paul Davies on Peg 33 with 46lb.4oz., for third place.
Note those peg numbers!
Paul White took fourth on Peg 17 with 33lb.8oz., and Dave Wilkins came fifth with 14lb., from Peg 27.
Thursday 4th November’s Open Match held on the big lake at Chaley Park fished quite well given the weather and here are the top five results, including a couple of Cove Angling Committee members,so,
On Peg 19, Brian Stevens took top spot with a very creditable 60lb.
Simon Hunter appeared again with 27lb. from Peg 24 for second place.
Then Rod Carroll on Peg 9 made third with 25lb.4oz., Dave Wilkins was fourth with 24lb. from Peg 29, and Paul Davies fifth on Peg 21 with 16lb.
Here are the top five results from today’s open match on the big lake at Chaley Park.
First place, on Peg 9, goes to Brian Stevens with 45lb.
Second this week, fishing Peg 11, Dave Wilkins with 42lb.4oz.
Terry Davies came third on Peg 31 with 32lb.
Alec Barter made fourth netting 30lb.4oz., from Peg 7
Simon Hunter made fifth on Peg 21 with 19lb.12oz.
Good fishing in what I suspect were none too warm conditions with a bit of wind on the water.
The decision has been made to continue the remaining opens of this season on the big lake. So, same time, same place next week, except your clocks will have gone back in the meantime.
Today’s (21 Oct 2021) report is very short because Rod dropped the weights sheet so these results are from memory. I’ll check tomorrow to see if the sheet is still in the car park when I go to Chaley to try for a fish from the big lake! In the meantime, no need to correct me, nobody died, I’m just doing my best…
First Peg 17 Alec Barter 48lb.
Second Peg 13 Dave Wilkins 44lb.12oz.
Third Peg 11 Tony Conway 34lb.
Fourth Peg 19 Mark Gilliam 32lb.
Fifth Peg 29 Simon Hunter 31lb.
All weights are like steaks on the menu, approximate, and the top five are:
Simon Hunter 59
Alec Barter 53
Mark Gilliam 42
Tim Meekins 39
Paul Davies 30
On Thursday 14 October the Open Match was held on the big lake at Chaley Park. It fished hard, as it had all week, and this is reflected in the low weights recorded. The weather and the season have changed, there was a grass frost in the area early Thursday morning, so here are the weights, well done all.
On Peg 7, Jim Findlay took top spot with 29lb.8oz.
Tim Meekins showed his face again with 22lb., off Peg 33 for second place.
Only a roach separated Steve Lucie on Peg 29 in third with 20lb.4oz., from Paul Davies in fourth on Peg 5 with 20lb., and only another few ounces less put Paul White into fifth on Peg 13 with 19lb.4oz.
Bit of a grey day today at Chaley Park for the Thursday Open Match held, this week, on the big lake. Still eighteen anglers registered to fish on 7 October and nearly 400lb., was caught. It looks like a week for different names in the top five, or at least, names we don’t see as often as we should.
First, on Peg 13, Tony Tucker with 60lb.8oz.
Second, Steve Lucie on Peg 33 netted 50lb.12oz.
Third, on Peg 11, our club Chairman Rod Carroll, who manages to organise, fish and weigh in, and still get a place with 42lb.8oz.
Fourth, another name we haven’t seen in this frame for a while, with 39lb., from Peg 19, Jim Findlay.
And fifth this week but a regular “show” in these reports, Roger Thorpe on Peg 35 with 30lb.12oz.
So the top six are:
Simon Hunter 58
Alec Barter 48
Mark Gilliam 40
Tim Meekins 35
Paul Davies 28
Roy Fiander 28
Nice fishing, same lake next week, same time, be there!
30 Sept 2021. A bit colder, a bit damper, altogether a bit more autumnal but still they came to the big lake at Chaley and the top five weights today were:
Mark Gilliam on Peg 31 took first place with a creditable 48lb., a whisker ahead of Tim Meekins, round the other side of the lake on Peg 19 in second place with 47lb.8oz.
Just over a pound short of that came Terry Davies on Peg 7 grabbing third place with 46lb.4oz., followed by Brian Stevens on Peg 11 coming fourth with 42lb.4oz., and fifth this week, Roy Fiander with 32lb., from Peg 33.
Thanks to all anglers for your support, and thanks to rod and Paul for organising and weighing in.
An update on the small lake has been emailed or posted to all members today. Please read this important message and ensure you have and use a Carp Care Kit when fishing either. Lake at Chaley Park.
Did the sun manage to break through the cloud today (23 Sept 2021)? Probably not much during the open match at Chaley Park which was held on the small lake this week. The fish are showing some signs of stress so if you are pleasure fishing at Chaley in the coming days, please make sure you have your carp care kit with you and use it to help the fish back into good condition.
Results for 23 September 2021 are:
First, on Peg 11, Simon Hunter with 35lb.
Second, on Peg 14, Dave Wilkins, weighing in 32lb.8oz.
Third, Mark Gilliam on Peg 10 with 31lb. Fourth Alec Barter with 17lb.4oz., from Peg19 and Fifth Tony Conway on Peg 22 with 16lb.
Fourteen anglers fished this week’s (16 Sept) Thursday Open Match on Chaley Park’s big lake. An early morning mist and a chill in the air gave way to a pretty hot day without rain.
Eight people weighed in and the winners’ enclosure this week is:
First on Peg 31 with 55lb.8oz., Alec Barter.
Second, Tim Meekins with 34lb.80z., from Peg 9
Third, on Peg 19, Mark Gilliam weighing in 30lb.
Fourth, Brian Stevens on Peg 17 with 27lb., and fifth, Roger Thorpe on Peg 29 with 25lb.
Thursday 9 September, the Open Match this week was held on the small lake again. After three days of hot glorious weather, today was cooler with the occasional shower. The lake lived up to its recent reputation and did not fish well. However here are the top five names, peg numbers and weights.
First this week was Roy Fiander on Peg 9 with 42lb.12oz.
Second, on Peg 6 was Brian Stevens with 35lb.
Third on Peg 24, Roger Thorpe netting 34lb.12oz.
Fourth went to Kevin Wyness on Peg 22 with 27lb and a guest of Roger Thorpe came in fifth with 21lb. on Peg 18.
2 September 2021, the first Thursday in September and in dry weather this week’s open match returned to the big lake at Chaley Park for the first time in four weeks with excellent results. Over 330lb. was weighed in and some big fish were caught, including doubles approaching 20lb., all in good-looking condition. It just shows you what a short break can do for fish.
First place this week went to Alec Barter on Peg 19 with a superb 88lb.12oz.
Second was the ubiquitous, but consistent, Simon Hunter on Peg 17 with 70lb.12oz.
Third place went to Chaley Water Manager, David Wilkins who netted 59lb.4oz., from Peg 3.
Fourth Pete Hoare on Peg 21 with 45lb.12oz., and Fifth on Peg 29 Ged Cooper with 44lb.4oz.
Thursday 26 August and a dry, if not very sunny day for the last match on the small lake before we go back to matches on both lakes again. Sadly, no-one told the fish, so this weeks rather sparse winner’s enclosure looks like this.
First on Peg 13 was Roy Fiander with 26lb.
Brian Stevens took second place on Peg19 with 23lb., and Roger Thorpe made third on Peg 17 weighing in 11lb.8oz.
Fourth was Ged Cooper on Peg 1 with 10lb..8oz., and a tie for fifth, Peter Hoare on Peg 5 and Alec Barter on Peg 8 both with 9lb.
Next Thursday’s (2 September) Open will be on the big lake but thereafter alternating with the small lake as previously timetabled.
Thursday 19 August and a day of good weather greeted the Chaley Park open match men to the small lake once again and, this week with better results. Upwards of 500lb., of fish were caught and weighed in this week including a couple of good weight (6/7llb.) Bream and a nice 12 oz Tench.
First this week, Tim Meekins on Peg 5 netting a massive 91lb.4oz.
Paul Davies with 77lb.4oz., from Peg 24 took second place, while Club Treasurer, Paul White made third on Peg 6 weighing in 65lb.8oz.
Fourth this week was Simon Hunter on Peg 21 with 61lb.8oz., and fifth, Roger Thorpe on Peg 10 with 46lb.4oz.
If we were looking for another name, we could mention Fred Jackson who netted 39lb8oz. Sadly for Fred, just a mention. No prize, no points and no big cigar.
So what, you may ask, happened at the Thursday Open on the small lake at Chaley Park today. From the top five weights recorded, it looks like, despite generally good weather, the fish were reluctant to feed.
First this week, Tim Meekins on Peg 24 with 51lb. Well done Tim.
Just pipped into second place with 50lb.8oz., from Peg 10, was Roger Thorpe.
Then a big weight drop to our third placed Simon Hunter who netted 32lb.12oz., from Peg 6.
Jim Findlay took 30lb., from Peg 19 for fourth place and Paul Davies came fifth on Peg 4 with 27lb.8oz.
Next week will still be on the small lake but hopefully, the following week will see a return to the big lake.
Today’s open match on the small lake at Chaley Park started in good weather but the rain came down all afternoon so it really was a match of two halves.
Coming out on top was first placed Paul Davies on Peg 8 with a total catch of 62lb.8oz.
Roger Thorpe came second netting 51lb.8oz., from Peg 2 with Roy Fiander taking third place on Peg 4 with 46lb.4oz.
Fourth, on Peg 1, Simon Hunter managed 45lb.8oz., and Mark Gilliam took fifths place with 40lb., on Peg 22.
29 July 2021 Thursday Open was held on the small lake at Chaley Park (as it will be through August). It was windy, overcast and cooler, very little sunshine but at least the rain held off.
Celebrating tonight, with Team GB swimmers, is first placed Tony Conway who managed to catch 82lb.8oz., from Peg 11.
Today’s silver medal went to Alec Barter, close by on Peg 8, with 71lb.8oz.
The bronze goes to Roger Thorpe, again close by on Peg 9, with 50lb.8oz.
This week’s Team GB Rowers are, in fourth place, Simon Hunter with 47lb.8oz., from the other side of the lake on Peg 21 and fifth, half a dozen pegs away on Peg 2, Dave Hoare with a nice 43lb.8oz.
22nd July Thursday Open match where sixteen came out today to try their luck and between them managed to net over 300lb., of fish. From a lake that is absolutely teeming with fish, large and small.
Simon Hunter took first place on this week’s leaderboard with a superb 75lb.8oz., from Peg 29.
Joint second this week were Paul White Peg 11 and Alec Barter Peg 19 who both weighed in 47lb.8oz.
Fourth goes to Tony Cocks with 46lb., from Peg 23 and fifth on Peg 31, Paul Davies with 38lb.
Thursday 15 July and this week’s open match was held on the small lake at Chaley Park. Some not so regular names feature in the top five this week. First place went to Paul Davies on peg 7 with 69lb. Second Tim Meekins, almost diametrically opposite round the lake on peg 20 with 58lb.
Third was Club Treasurer, Paul White, showing in the leaders’ frame for only the third time this season, on peg 11 with 54lb. Another committee member Fred Jackson, also put in his third appearance this season to come fourth on peg 8 with 47lb., and Garry Davies made up the top five this week with fifth on peg 23 with 40lb.
8 July Open on the big lake at Chaley Park. I’m told that the showers there were stair rods but there must have been some sun in between…………
Winning weights were spread all round the lake and first this week on Peg 11 was Will Marchant with the biggest weight of the season so far, a magnificent 93lb.8oz.
Second Alec Barter on Peg 17 weighed in 78lb.8oz. Third a new name to note, Tony J who landed 50lb.8oz., on Peg 23.
Simon Hunter came fourth on Peg 31 with 45lb.8oz., and just making fifth, our very own Mr David Wilkins managed 41lb., from Peg 13.
Very good top weight, I’m looking forward to reporting a more than 100lb., weight from one of these matches very soon, and good fishing all round.
July 1 Thursday Open Match news from Chaley Park small lake today.

Fourth and fifth went to Alec Barter (Peg 3) and Terry Pilgrim (Peg 35) with 36lb., and 32lb.8oz., respectively.
Well done all, thanks for your support, back to the small, lake next week.
